A gigantic 8.7 magnitude tremor rocked Indonesia on Wednesday (11 April 2012), spreading fears of tsunami among the people living in the area. Scroll down for first video images which show the panic and agitation that ovewhelmed the residents.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami watch was in effect for the entire Indian Ocean and individual countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, issued tsunami warnings.
People along the coast of 6 Thai provinces were ordered to higher ground.
According to USGS, the quake took place about 430 km southwest of Banda Aceh (Indonesia’s Sumatra island) at a depth of 23 km.

The 2004 quake was located 250 km off coast Banda Aceh at a depth of 30 km along a fault line lying under the Indian Ocean, off western Indonesia and up into the Bay of Bengal.
However experts are optimistic as they think Wednesday quake as a “strike-slip” fault, resulting in a more horizontal displacement of the underwater ground as opposed to a sudden vertical jump which is known for triggering tsunamis.
