YouTube was reportedly on the verge of being banned in Russia!!!

Wednesday YouTube was briefly placed on the blacklist with webpages banned in Russia provoking strong reactions on the internet, but authorities quickly denied the information, citing a “technical error”.

At 16.30 local time (12.30 GMT), Youtube.com was seen as a site containing information prohibited by law in the Federal Register which governs the activity of web pages, reported France Presse.

It emerged that world’s most popular video-sharing site was added to the registry following a request from Rospotrebnadzor, the Federal Service for Consumer Protection.

The head of the service Gennady Onishchenko wanted to clarify the situation claiming that not the entire site was blacklisted but only certain pages, especially those with videos featuring suicide scenes.

Contacted by AFP, Vladimir Pikovit, a representative of the Russian Agency for media monitoring “Roskomnadzor” which manages the registry, reported also a ‘technical error’.

At around 17.00 local (13.00 GMT), YouTube was no longer on Russia’s blacklist.
