“We just received confirmation that Nils Horner, a correspondent for Swedish public radio station, was shot dead in Kabul this (Tuesday) morning,” Peter Semneby, Swedish Ambassador to Afghanistan told AFP.
Semneby said that the victim has dual citizenship, British and Swedish , and that his family was “informed”.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stockholm confirmed the death of a “Swedish citizen”.

The crime was committed in the Wazir Akbar Khan, a fancy residence considered safe before a Taliban suicide commando launched the deadly January 17 attack on the Lebanese restaurant ” La Taverna du Liban” resulting in 21 deaths, including 13 foreigners.

“I heard a gunshot and saw a man collapsing,” said a witness adding that the assailant was accompanied by another man, perhaps an accomplice, and both fled the spot after the shooting.

The crime scene was isolated by Afghan security forces , including intelligence agents within (NDS).
The attack was not claimed by Tuesday at noon. AFP reached out to the Taliban who said they were not involved in the incident.

“I checked with our fighters and they are not involved,” assured Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the rebels.

Much later after the shooting, Nils Horner’s death was claimed by the Taliban splinter group Fidai Mahaz which was connected to the kidnapping of a New York Times reporter 6 years ago.

In a message uploaded on its website, Fidai Mahaz explained that radio journalist Nils Horner was killed because he was spying for the UK government.

“[Horner] was not a journalist, he was a spy of MI6, he was a special worker of MI6. He was targeted by Fidai movement,” said the brief English-language statement attributed to the spokesman Qari Hamza.

Fidai Mahaz is not closely linked to the mainstream Taliban forces, but the group is know for trying to build a reputation for bad things.

Tuesday’s incident takes place one month before the first round of the Afghan presidential elections on April 5.

The death of another foreigner in Kabul after less than two months since the attack on “La Taverna du Liban”, is likely to raise concerns of the expatriate community members in the Afghan capital, as the presidential election will be attended by numerous foreign journalists.
