Moldova commemorates 7th anniversary of Grigore Vieru’s death

People of the Republic of Moldova remembered Grigore Vieru on Monday, a day which marked seven years since the tragic death of the famed poet and writer who lost his life following a traffic accident.

On 16 January 2009, Vieru was involved in a dramatic car accident and admitted to the Emergency Hospital in Chisinau. He had little chance of survival due to the critical condition, the poet suffering of multiple trauma, head injuries, cerebral contusion, chest wounds, heart and lung contusion and abdominal organ damage.

The crash unfolded on 16 January at 01:30 a.m. on the R3 route Chisinau-Basarabeanca and at the time of the event the steering wheel was in the hands of George Munteanu, a Honored Artist of the Republic of Moldova and Deputy Director of folk dance group “Joc” from Chisinau. Munteanu survived the accident with light injuries.

Grigore Vieru died two days later, on January 18, at Chisinau Hospital following a cardiac arrest. Efforts to resuscitate him turned out to be unsuccessful.
