27 dead in Antonov An-72 military plane crash in Kazakhstan. No survivors

A military aircraft of type Antonov An-72, carrying 27 people on board crashed on Tuesday near the city of Shymkent in southern Kazakhstan, announced security services of Central Asian country cited by AFP. Russian media reports that no survivors were found.

According to Interfax and RIA-Novosti, all passengers and crew members lost their lives in the crash, but initially authorities had not confirmed it yet.

UPDATE 00.30. Also local media confirmed that the 27 people on board Antonov An-72 plane which had taken off in the capital city of Astana, died. The airplane crashed at 6:55 p.m. local time (12:55 GMT) about 20 kilometers from Shymkent (Simkent) where it was scheduled to land, said security service KNB in a press release.

The plane was transporting a crew of seven and 20 border soldiers, including also the acting director of the border protection service, Col. Turganbek Stambekov.

Three hours after the crash, no survivors had been found, reveals AFP.

According to the TV channel KTK, the aircraft was flying at a height of 800 meters in bad weather conditions.

A spokesman told the Russian state-run agency Itar-Tass that no new information about passengers or crew members emerged. He added that an investigation was initiated to determine the cause of the accident.
