At least 245 people died in a fire that broke out during the night of Saturday to Sunday in a club in the Brazilian city of Santa Maria, according to sources close to rescue services, quoted by local media.

According to the newspaper Estado de S.Paulo, the fire erupted from fireworks in a night club where about 2,000 people were inside.

The initial death toll was estimated to 90 but the number of fatalities was revised higher as dead bodies of 245 people were taken out of the club, said the head of the intervention services, Gerson Major Ferreira da Rosa, quoted by BBC.

The incident occurred in the nightclub “Kiss” in the town of Santa Maria, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

A musical band used fireworks during the show, but the acoustic system caught fire and the revelers got asphyxiated.

20-year-old Ingrid Goldani, an employee of the nightclub for 6 weeks, told reporters that two bands were playing on Saturday night.
