Bomb explosion rocks Acropolis area in Athens. Shipowner Nikos Takos home targeted

A bomb exploded Wednesday near the Acropolis in Athens without causing casualties, and according to local police the attack apparently targeted a Greek shipping magnate.

A Greek newspaper received an anonymous call at 8:10 p.m. announcing that a bomb would explode at 20:30 in front of the residence of the ship owner Tsakos,” a police source told AFP.

The zone has been evacuated and so far there is no information about possible victims, added the same source.

The bomb was hidden in a black bag and placed at the entrance of the building that is located a few hundred meters below the Acropolis, a very visited touristic site in the Greek capital.

Tsakos Group is among the leading shipping companies in Greece. It is not known so far what member of the Tsakos family had been the target of the attack.

50-year-old Nikos Tsakos, the son of the the shipping company founder, Panagiotis Tsakos, was a member of the Board of Directors of Bank of Cyprus, one of the financial institutions involved in the crisis currently affecting the Mediterranean island, which is strongly economically linked to Greece.
