The young ex-athlete disclosed the sad news in a short message posted on the microblogging website Twitter which linked to a statement on the Lawn Tennis Association LTA website, where Baltacha said: “I have recently been diagnosed with cancer of the liver. I’m currently undergoing treatment and fighting this illness with everything I have”.

30-year-old Elena Baltacha quit sports in November 2013 after winning 11 tennis singles titles across her career. Shortly after her retirement, she has married her long-term coach and partner Nino Severino and has been coaching junior tennis players at an academy in her hometown of Ipswich.

According to Wikipedia, Elena Sergeevna Baltacha was born on 14 August 1983 and is a former British professional tennis player of Ukrainian roots. She claimed the Aegon Award four times and was for long British No. 1, a position she held intermittently from 2002 to 2012.
