The US space agency has partnered with company Harmonic to launch NASA TV UHD, the first non-commercial UltraHD (UHD or 4K) television station in North America.

AMC-18, a geostationary communications satellite operated by SES Americon, will be used to broadcast television’s programs. The partnership is the outcome of a Space Act Agreement, a cooperation agreement signed by Harmonic with Marshall Space Flight Center, a NASA center operated in Huntsville in the US state of Alabama.

Using Harmonic’s UHD video transmission system, NASA Television will have the ability to broadcast linear video content in the 2160p60 standard, giving viewers the opportunity to watch programs on a wide range of TVs and devices connected to the internet.
