Legendary actor Sebastian Papaiani died Tuesday morning according to Romanian state-run television TVR. He was 80-year-old.
Papaiani’s death comes just a day after Ioan Gyuri Pascu, – a great comedian, actor and musician -, passed away at his home in the Romanian capital following a cardiac arrest.
Sebastian Papaiani was born on August 25, 1936 in Pitesti, Arges County. He spent his childhood, as he recounted, “in a modest neighborhood which a lot of friendly Gypsies around”.
His father, Alec Papaiani was of Greek origin (Papayannis) and known as the owner of a residential area on the outskirts of Pitesti where two-room apartments were rented to low class workers.
Papaiani graduated from the Institute of Theater and Cinema in 1960 and made his film debut three years later in Geo Zaizescu’s comedy “Un suras in plina vara” (A smile in the middle of summer), when he received critical acclaims alongside gorgeous actress Florina Luican. Then he starred in a tremendous number of films being remembers by his movie fans for his roles in: “BD …” (Plutonier Capsuna), “Asta seara dansam in familei” (Alecu), “Toamna bobocilor” (Pompei) and “Toate panzele sus” (Ieremia)
