British woman dies in Tenerife supermarket attack

A 62-year-old British woman was left with a cut neck in a supermarket from the Spanish tourist resort of Tenerife after a knife attack initiated by a young man, Spanish authorities said.

The suspect, Deyan Valentinov, aged 28, is known as a street guy, originates from Bulgaria and had already a criminal record. He was subsequently caught by security forces after escaping from the supermarket with the woman’s head in his hands.

A representative of the local authorities said: “It seems that the young man, without any reason, although there is no reason for such a gesture, entered the shop, beheaded the woman and came out into the street.”  The killer was living in a semi-abandoned house and deployed his attack on Friday (13/4/11) at about 10:30 a.m. After the killing he yelled: God is on Earth.

According to a government official, the suspect chose randomly the victim; there was no relation between the attacker and the victim. The murderer is suspected to have been released in February from a hospital where he was treated for violent behavior.
