Russia: Antonov 24 aircraft landed on River Obi, 5 died

Five people died on Monday after an Antonov 24 passenger plane landed on river Obi in Siberia because of damage experienced by one of the engines, the Russian authorities have announced, quoted by AFP.

An investigation committee revealed that five people died and four got wounded in the incident.

Rosaviatsia aviation agency said that the plane was carrying 32 passengers and was en route from Tomsk to Surgut (Siberia) when the crew noticed that one engine is on fire.

“According to preliminary information, the accident occurred due to a fire in one engine,” said an investigation committee member.

News agency RIA Novosti said that about 20 people were hospitalized.

“The crew said that one engine is on fire and announced through their intention to land,” said a spokesman for Rosaviatsia.

Antonov 24 (An-24) is a twin-engine turbo-propeller plane which was lauched in 1960 in the Soviet Union. It was used as a regional transport aircraft  and there were made over a thousand copies before the stop of its production in 1979.

An-24 plane crash occured just one day after (Sunday) a cruise ship capsized and sank into the waters of River Volga, a tragedy that claimed the lives of over a hundred people.
