The meteorite that scared Russia on Friday morning plunged into a lake near Chebarkul, in Chelyabinsk Oblast region (scroll down for impressive videos).

Region’s capital city of Chelyabinsk, located near the Russian border with Kazakhstan, was seriously shaken as a meteor disintegrated just above it Friday morning. The city was bombarded with dozens of meteorite fragments and more than 1,000 people were left injured after windows of buildings shattered.

Tim O’Brien, an associate director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory from the University of Manchester, says that the meteor caused a sonic boom which led to broken windows.

A six meter circular hole was found after the meteorite hit the frozen surface of Lake Chebarkul, according to Russian military sources.

According to an uncofirmed report, published in Russia Today, the meteorite would have been intercepted in the air by the Russian army.
