The beach was temporarily closed following the dramatic incident that emerged on Wednesday 27 February 2013. Deadly shark attacks are seen as rare incidents as just a dozen took place in the past 200 years in New Zealand.

Fisherman Pio Mose claims to have seen the swimmer fighting off the “enormous” shark. Mose advised the swimmer to get to some rocks nearby, but there wasn’t enough time for that as the predator moved faster in its habitat.
