Scores of people have died after a passenger airplane operated by Tatarstan Airlines nosedived vertically and crashed on landing in the city of Kazan, in the Russian republic of Tatarstan on Sunday evening, according for the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations cited by media agency RiaNovosti. Spokesperson Irina Rossius said the plane, a Boeing 737 which was carrying fifty people on board, was on a route from Moscow to Kazan and crashed at 19:30 Moscow time, adding that an explosion was reported. Preliminary information claim that all passengers on board were killed.

According to a spokesman for the Federal Air Transport Agency Rosaviatsiya, the pilot tried to bring the aircraft to the ground after three failed landing attempts, adding that Kazan airport has been closed.

Television Rossiya-24 TV reported that the aircraft had 44 passengers and six crew members on board. Russia’s Interior Ministry said the jet was part of Tatarstan Airlines fleet.

Authorities believe that a human error could be held responsible for the cause of the accident.

An investigation is ongoing and Russian President Vladimir Putin urged the government to set up a team to investigate Kazan’s deadly crash landing.

The fire was extinguished at the scene, said a local official sources.

In the images, the plane appears to fall vertically from the sky before blasting into pieces on the runway.

“We will not land” were the last words said by chief pilot Rustem Salikhov to an air traffic controller.

“The plane simply fell. It plunged vertically into the ground. The ground impact resulted in a huge explosion,” said the transport minister Maksim Sokolov.

Investigators are now considering five possible causes for the crash: pilot error, technical failure, poor fuel quality, adverse weather conditions or a erroneous instructions of the control tower.
