Mars doughnut rock shocked NASA scientists, went viral, but mystery solved by wheel of Rover Opportunity

NASA engineers say they have managed to decipher the mystery of a rock that seems to have appeared from nowhere right before the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity (do not confuse it with its twin robot Spirit (2004-2010) or the more recent rover Curiosity (2012-)).

In early January, a donut-shaped rock appeared “as if from nowhere” just in front of Rover Opportunity which has been exploring the Martian surface since 2004.

Scientists have confessed they had never seen anything like this in their life and rock’s analysis revealed an unusual structure: very rich in sulfur and magnesium and having twice as much manganese than any other structure found on Mars.

No aliens on Red Planet!!!
Now, NASA researchers say they have finally solved the mystery. The puzzling doughnut rock called “Pinnacle Island”, is in fact the fragment of a larger rock that was broken by the Opportunity’s wheels and flicked to the current spot. It seems that the Martian rover has moved the rock fragment by a few inches.

A statement from NASA press release reads:

“Only about 1.5 inches wide (4 centimeters), the white-rimmed, red-centered rock caused a stir last month when it appeared in an image the rover took Jan. 8 at a location where it was not present four days earlier.”

“Once we moved Opportunity a short distance, after inspecting Pinnacle Island, we could see directly uphill an overturned rock that has the same unusual appearance,” said Opportunity Deputy Principal Investigator Ray Arvidson of Washington University in St. Louis. “We drove over it. We can see the track. That’s where Pinnacle Island came from.”

Of course, the explanation given by the U.S. space agency will not appease the fans of alien stories and conspiracy theories who know better what it is about.
