Former French President NICOLAS SARKOZY arrested for influence peddling
NICOLAS SARKOZY. Ex French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been placed in custody Tuesday morning in a case of alleged influence peddling facts, and the action is seen as an unprecedented step against a former head of the French state, said a judicial source.
Sarkozy was detained after hearings at the request of prosecutors. Former President of France is reportedly involved in a case of influence peddling that helped his 2007 presidential campaign. NICOLAS SARKOZY is presumed to have received 50 million Euro from Muammar al-Gaddafi.
Sarkozy arrived on Tuesday morning at the headquarters of the Anti-Corruption Brigade and investigators are set to interrogate Sarkozy for up to 24 hours, a period that can be extended by another 24 hours.

Thierry Herzog was placed in custody in order to be interrogated by the Office for Combating Corruption within the Judicial Police. Two senior judges have also been placed in custody, according to the same source.
In a judicial inquiry opened on 26 February by the French National Prosecution, investigators want to find out also if Sarkozy was illigally informed that he was being wiretapped.
This decision – spectacular since it was ordered against a former president – was taken in September, in a case concerning allegations that Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi funded Sarkozy’s presidential campaign in 2007 when he became the head of state.
The two officials who were arrested on Monday, are Gilbert Azibert, an Advocate General at the Court of Cassation, who was promised a “prestigious” job, and another attorney general of the High Court, Patrick Sassoust.
These legal actions occur in a context where Sarkozy is increasingly quoted for a political comeback by taking over leadership of his party, the right wing UMP, that faces an unprecedented crisis due to a case involving false invoices.
