VIDEO: “El Chapo” Guzman arrest: Secretive interview with actor Sean Penn helped catch the famous Mexican drug lord

After escaping twice from prison, the famous Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman gave an interview to the US actor Sean Penn during a secretive meeting in the middle of a Mexico jungle. Guzman was arrested on Friday while preparing his biopic, and now faces extradition to the United States, according to CNN.

Mexican authorities have announced that they will extradite Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to the United States, where he is charged with drug trafficking in connection with the cartel he leads.

“Since Guzman Loera was recaptured, we should start the extradition proceedings,” the Mexican Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

Attorney General Arely Gomez said that US authorities have requested the extradition of Guzman since June 16, 2015, shortly before he escaped for the second time from a Mexican highly secured jail.

Three months after his getaway, Guzman met with Sean Penn and recorded an interview for Rolling Stone magazine in which he talked about his drug operations, saying it provides “more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anyone in the world”.

Guzman spoke with Mr. Penn for a few hours at an unknown location in Mexico and weeks later, he responded to further questions which were submitted through an intermediary. The responses were included in a video which was delivered to the movie star.

“I have a fleet of submarines, aircraft, trucks and boats,” Guzman told Penn in the interview that was posted online on Saturday.

“El Chapo was finally located and captured because its representatives have contacted producers and actors to achieve a biopic dedicated to him,” Mexico’s prosecutor general said.

“Another important aspect that led to the success of our manhunt, was Guzman Loerie’s intention to do a biopic by establishing contacts with actors and producers, fact which formed a new line of investigation,” said Gomez.

Hollywood will most likely make a film about El Chapo, as with other drug barons like Pablo Escobar, but Guzman will have no direct connection with the production, because he has to get back to the maximum security prison where he escaped from six months ago.

Two US officials said that huge efforts of monitoring the communications -including mobile phones and electronic messages- of Guzman’s closest aids, were critical for his capture.

United States shared intelligence with Mexico, but the operation was carried out exclusively by Mexican authorities, the US officials said.

Joaquin Guzman, alias “El Chapo,” escaped from Altiplano maximum security prison in July 2015 when he broke out through a tunnel dug by members of his drug cartel.

He was captured on Friday after Mexican forces stormed a house in the coastal city of Los Mochis, located in Guzman’s home province of Sinaloa. The house had been overseen for a month, said Attorney General Arely Gomez. El Chapo arrived at his home on Thursday and authorities started the operation Friday morning.

Mexican forces were targeted by gunfire from inside the house, according to Gomez. Five suspects were killed and six arrested, while a member of the Mexican forces was wounded.

During the standoff, Guzman and a deputy managed to flee through a tunnel leading into the city’s sewer system. The soldiers chased them through the network of tunnels, but they managed to surface and steal a car. Guzman was about to escape again, but the authorities have located his car on a highway outside the city and captured him.

Guzman’s arrest was announced on Twitter by Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, who wrote: “Mission accomplished: we captured him. I would like to inform the Mexican nationals that Joaquin Guzman Loerie was arrested”.

After a few hours, the drug leader’s sons, Alfredo Guzman and Ivan Archivaldo Guzman, have posted several messages on Twitter in which they threaten the Mexican authorities.

“You do not know what you did or the misery you got involved in” wrote Ivan Archivaldo Guzman on his Twitter account, in a message addressed to the special forces that captured his father.
