The 24-year-old former athlete was in the car with his wife when the incident broke out. Another driver rammed their vehicle, then pulled out a gun and opened fire killing Mr. Smith and injuring his wife in the right leg.

The medical teams called to the scene could only pronounce the death of the ex-NFL star. His wife was in stable condition.

The suspect, Cardell Hayes, 28, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, the New Orleans Police Department said in a Twitter message.
