Model, fashion writer Lauren Scruggs mutilated by airplane propeller

Lauren Scruggs had amputated hand after spinning plane propeller accident

A very terrifying odd accident for Lauren Sruggs who almost lost her life after heading into…the propeller of a plane, according to DailyMail (scroll down for video and photo).

Following the accident Scruggs suffered serious face and hand injuries. Apparently she featured multiple facial cuts, shoulder slashes and despite of being hospitalized and stabilized, the doctors were constrained to amputate her left hand.

23-year-old Lauren Scruggs, a style website owner, was injured as she got off a small 2011 Aviat Husky airplane at Aero County Airport in McKinney, Texas where she landed after a trip to view the Christmas lights from above.

Now Miss Scruggs is receiving treatment at Parkland Memorial Hospital where she is surrounded by her family (parents Jeff and Cheryl and her twin sister Brittany). According to latest news she is able just to wink one of her eyes and move the remaining right hand.

The young lady lives in Plano, Dallas and is well known for builing up her own professional fashion website.
A close friend of the family released a statement: ‘Speaking on behalf of Scruggs family, your prayers are very appreciated and felt every moment.”

What a senseless tragedy. I’ve been a private pilot for almost 50 years, and I have never, ever allowed a passenger to leave the plane until I have the engine shut off and the propeller is stopped and cleared. I can’t begin to imagine why this pilot didn’t do that. This is a rare accident, fortunately, but when they do happen, they can be absolutely catastrophic. My prayers are with Ms. Scruggs and her family. I hope she comes through this OK. And I hope her accident serves as a “model” to remind all pilots to practice safety around airplanes, including instructing the passengers to be aware of the dangers on the flight line..

My husband is a pilot and we own our own plane! We agree with the safety issue here! Amen! Hope this beautiful young woman recovers well!

Don’t be absurd. If people had to be kept away from planes when the propeller moved then no one could EVER be near a plane. Propellers move even from the wind with great torque. They keep moving for a long time after the engine is shut off. People walk out of helicopters with the blades going strong, and its perfectly safe. As long as the passengers are intelligent enough to keep away from the blades, that is. NO ONE normal will ever support the idea of keeping the passengers inside the airplane until the prop stops moving. It is just silly. My heart is sad for the young lady, but the fault is all hers. She is probably very slow witted. Even children know to fear a propeller. They are very l;od and the wind from them is strong. Its not like you could miss it. What kind of idiot doesn’t know where the propeller on a plane is. and to stay clear?

  6. Martine says:

How do you do that? The propeller keeps moving for at least thirty minutes after the engine is shut off. In fact even in commercial aircraft the propellers keep moving when the passengers get off. I have been flying two engine planes for years, and no one I know has ever even suggested we should wait until the propeller stops moving. I know there is absolutely nothing of the kind in any safety regulation. Propellers are dangerous even when they have stopped moving. they are always to be stayed away from. This woman was unusually slow witted. Even children know to fear a propeller. What about helicopters? Shall we stop using them at all? I mean you certainly can’t just sit inside until the blades stop. It would take half the day. What if someone decided to put their hand up? I very much doubt you are a pilot, Bob.

Martine…. Really??? NO prop spins for 30 min after shutdown, even if you flying behind a PT6 (unless the wind is blowing it). Helicopters which you mentioned have rotor brakes to stop them after shut down, and if you choose to hot load you have assistants to guide you pax away from the rotors. The plane in question had a piston engine and was running.
