Cruise ship Costa Concordia aground offshore Giglio Island, Italy: Fatalities reported

Cruise ship Costa Concordia carrying a total of 4223 people (3200 passengers + 1023 crew) on board remained stranded on the island of Giglio, off the coast of Tuscany, Italy in the night of Friday 13 Jan. 2012,,,,Friday 13!!! (see also video report).

So far, 8 people have been initially reported dead in the incident, then the number dropped to 6 and now the authorities revised the deaths number to 3. Italian media revealed the most of the passengers managed to escpae in life rafts but some of them were still missing. One of the victims, 65-year-old man, apparently died after freezing due to the low temperature of the water at night.

Costa Concordia, featuring a 290-meter length, departed from the port of Savona at 19:00 (20:00GMT) and was heading to Civitavecchia, when it ran aground around 21:00.
After getting stuck on the bottom of the sea, the cruise liner tilted about 20 degrees on its right side but without posing a sinking risk.

Rescue teams completed the evacuation of the people by 1:20 A.M. Saturday. However Il Messaggero newspaper stated that an estimate of 200 (probably part of crew) remained on board. The ship passengers were rushed to shelter on the island of Giglio.

The first rescued passengers were housed into a church. The priest said that many women wearing suits and high heels were accomodated in pews along with scared children. The rest of the people were taken to schools and hotels on the island.

Some passengers described the terrifying moments: ”We were enjoying the dinner when suddenly the lights switched off. It seemed as if the ship struck something and then we heard a load bang and everything fell to the floor.
”The captain of the ship quickly came on the tanoy and told us that there had been a power failure but it looked strange as the vessel almost immediately started to tilt on one side. The glasses just slid off the table.”

Another witness said: “It was just like something out of the Titanic. You could tell straight away that the ship had hit something and no way was it an electrical shortage.”
As Costa Concordia began listing, a few people jumped into the water and made it out to the island.
