Adrian Nastase, sentenced to two years in prison in Quality Trophy file

PSD lawmaker Adrian Nastase received 2-year jail term in corruption case "Trofeul Calitatii"

Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase has been sentenced to two years behind bars on Monday after being tried in the “Quality Trophy” file. Over 900 witnesses were heard during 48 sessions. Nastase who was cleared recently in another corruption case called Matusa Tamara (“Aunt Tamara”) claims he is innocent.

According to the High Court of Cassation and Justice, Nastase was charged in connection with fundraising for the 2004 campaign when he ran for Presidency. Now the ex-premier can appeal the non-irrevocable penalty.

The former Prime Minister said during his last hearing, that he is innocent and the trial is a political one. “It is legitimate for those who win political elections to “doctor” cases to those who lose. I have nothing to do with the “quality trophy”,” Nastase said.

Adrian Nastase has been indicted in this case in January 2009 on charges of use of influence or authority as the head of the government to obtain for himself money, goods or other benefits.

According to the indictment, during the election year 2004, ISC, managed by Irina Jianu, “began organizing a symposium entitled “the trophy of the quality in construction.” “In reality, the symposium represented a framework aimed at masking the collection of money for the presidential campaign of (then presidential candidate) Adrian Nastase,” stated the Romanian Anticorruption Division DNA. According to the prosecutors, the state budget was depleted of $2 million because of the scheme mastered by Nastase who lost at that time the election to Traian Basescu, who is still Romania’s president.

In a separate trial on 15 December 2011, a supreme court acquitted Adrian Nastase in the file “Matusa Tamara” (Aunt Tamara), which charged Nastase for corruption, along with his adviser and Ristea Priboi and the former head of the National Office for Preventing and Combating Money Laundering Ioan Melinescu. The National Anticorruption Department appealed the decision and the case will be re-analized by the judging board of the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

I don’t say that Adrian Năstase is a Saint, he has many sins, but believe me, I know what I know.. and this ScumBăsescu’s new diversion with Quality Trophy File prepared at the order by his obedient prosecutors and dirty secret services seems to work again to fool everybody from the real economic & social problems.
Nothing will happen with Năstase because he will go to defend himself at the European Court of Human Rights, but this is unfortunately another (PDL’s) typical maneuver to distract public attention from the 18 consecutive days of protests from the University Square at a temperature below -12’C. 🙁

Simon. I think Nastase can be saved only by the (usually corrupt) romanian justice. Do not think human rights court would do much for him as long as EU always stressed Romania to sentence the political cases. And Nastase was involved in many “weird” businesses and every time he escaped. It is funny that in Romania all politicians scream: “It’s a political case, the file was “doctored” by Basescu and PDL.”
That’s just a cheap trick to escape the justice and European Court for Human Rights will not probably see anything human at Nastase. So far most of the people blamed Basescu that justice was not working and politicians was cleared, but now when a sentence came-up, same people are angry??? What do they want? I believe many reached the negation age.:)

I know that the E.U. wants from us the big wolves behind bars, but like I said earlier, the obedient justice prefigures only old political revenge (vendetta) from one regime to another.. Now, what to say more.. No Comment, right ? http://www.nineoclock.ro/ex-president-basescu-could-have-been-arrested-over-fleet-affair/ 😉

ok:), maybe also Basescu will be convicted but do not expected to be in a near future,,,look, for Nastase it took 7-8 years. I am not really updated with “Fleet file” but I understood that at the time when Basescu got rid of the ships, the fleet was “characterized” by bankruptcy,,bceause the state did not have money to pay the debts and get back the ships which were seized in various ports around the world. Sometimes you give away your goods to pay the debt…anyway, I do not know details in this case which is quite puzzling and none shed light until now

P/S: Today’s sentence was probably a step forward for Romania, but I’m affraid that court decision will be canceled after being appealed. such situations happened most of the time in Romania
