UPDATE. Local media revealed that the shooting sparked inside a kindergarten classroom, and that all the pupils in that classroom are unaccounted for.

The children were aged between 5 and 10. Eighteen of the pupils were fatally shot at the school and two more died later, said police Lt. Paul Vance. Three of them are still in serious condition. According to FoxNews.com, the gunman was 20-year-old Adam Lanza who had links to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Lanza, who was shot dead inside the school, was in possession of a .223-caliber rifle and fired over 100 gunshots. A total of four firearms were retrieved from the scene. It is not known with certainty whether the shooter committed suicide or was killed by the law enforcement forces.

Police responded to an emergency call on Friday at 9.40 local time (16.40 GMT) that gunshots were heard at the “Sandy Hook” Elementary School in Newtown.
