Syrian kidnappers of Ukrainian journalist Ankhar Kochneva threaten with possible execution on December 26

Ukraine’s reporter Ankhar Kochneva was seized last October at 20 km away from Homs, near the town of Al-Qusayr by the Syria-Lebanon frontier.

Kochneva has been held captive ever since but now her kidnappers threaten to kill her on 26 December unless they get a 50 million dollar ransom, reported Voice of Russia

The Syrian kidnappers had initially vowed to kill Kochneva on Dec. 13, but on Tuesday they announced that journalist’s execution was postponed on grounds that the Ukrainian authorities do nothing for her release.

“The Ukrainian government and embassy were not serious with negotiations, did not keep their promises and did nothing for Anhar’s release,” said kidnappers’ leader, Abu Jandal.

Anhar Kochneva is a Ukrainian citizen, and resides in Moscow. Since the beginning of Syria’s conflict in 2011, she worked as a war reporter collaborating with several Russian media outlets, including Russia Today. She was an known for her sympathy to Bashar al-Assad’s regime, and often criticized rebels opposition forces, which sparked the reason for her kidnapping, Kochneva’s employer, the Utro news outlet unveiled.
