The first-team All-American player had reportedly confessed to his team colleagues that he was gay while on a before-season football work-out in 2013. Missouri’s players and trainer knew about Sam’s sexual orientation since last August.
“I am an openly, proud gay man. I understand how big this is,” said Michael Sam in the ESPN “Outside the Lines”. “It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be … I want to be a football player in the NFL.”
Michael Sam is entitled for the 2014 NFL recruitment in May. If he is picked, then he would become the first ever openly gay NFL player.
The 24-year-old decided that is better to discuss publicly, after figuring out 2 weeks ago at the Senior Bowl that lots of people knew something about his “secret”.
“I didn’t realize how many people actually knew, and I was afraid that someone would tell or leak something out about me,” he said. “I want to own my truth. … No one else should tell my story but me.”
“We admire Michael Sam’s honesty & courage,” the NFL said in a statement issued on Sunday “Michael is a football player. Any player with ability and determination can succeed in NFL.”
Sam grew up in the Texas town of Hitchcock, but he has not known for long time what was happening with him. In fact he was not quite sure about his real feelings.
“I knew from early age that I was attracted to guys. I didn’t know if it was a (transition) phase (…) I did not want to say, “Hey, I might be gay. I might be bi.” I just didn’t know … I wanted to find who I was and make sure I knew what was comfortable. So I didn’t tell anyone growing up.”
UPDATE: Michael Sam appears to be a model for Canadian actress Ellen Page who admitted publicly she is gay just a few days later, on Valentine’s Day (Feb.14, 2014). Page confessed at Time to Thrive conference in Las Vegas.
