Romania to buy anti-tank missiles and air defense radar as part of military investment plan

Antitank missiles worth 20 million euros and a US radar of 33 million dollars: these are the newest military acquisitions to be made by the Romanian authorities in addition to a 110 million contract!

Romania seem to invest increasingly more in its army. After signing last week a 110-million deal for the purchase of anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) and anti-tank portable missiles (Spike-MR), state-owned “Romtehnica” said it has now acquired additional ATGMs worth 20-million euro from the same German-Israeli consortium Eurospike.

ATGMs offer a large range of flexibility as they vary in size from shoulder-launched weapons, which can be transported by a single soldier, to larger tripod-mounted weapons, which require a squad or team to transport and fire, to vehicle and aircraft mounted missile systems.

In addition to the new antitank weapons purchase, the Romanian state announced also the intention to seal off a $32.7 million deal with Lockheed Martin Overseas Corporation for a mobile three-dimensional long range air defense radar TPS-77.

The radar, type AN/FPS-117, is familiar to the Romanian army which been using five such units since 1998.
