According to Belgian media, the terror attacks killed at least 34 people and injured more than a hundred. The blasts at Maelbeek metro station reportedly left 15 people dead and 55 wounded, of which 15 critically. Meanwhile, in Belgium terror alert was raised to the highest level.

Black smoke could be seen over the airport buildings shortly after people heard the noise of the detonations, which took place a few seconds one after the other.

It has been revealed that the explosions at Zaventem occurred before the security checkpoints near row 8 in the departures hall which is the American Airlines counter.

In a preliminary report, Belgian police said that the blasts at the airport were triggered by suicide bombers while the disaster at the metro station was caused by a bomb placed in a train.

Social media is overwhelmed by images showing injured people and desperate crowd running away from the airport buildings or the subway exists.

The bombings in Belgium come just days after Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the Paris terror attacks last year, was arrested in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek on Friday following a large police operation.

UPDATE: “Small blasts near Maalbeek station ‘part of controlled explosion of package'”
New explosions occurred on Rue de la Loi in a district where the headquarters of many European institutions are located, write the media agencies.

French newspaper Le Soir reports that a number of small blasts heard on the Rue de la Loi, the location of Maelbeek metro station, were part of a controlled explosion of a suspect package. No one was hurt in the incident because the street had been already evacuated.
