The security services knew with a high degree of certainty that there were plans of attacking the airport and apparently the subway, in the very near future.

Haaretz said that the attacks were planned by the Islamic State in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the capital of the Islamic caliphate.
It seems clear at this point that the same terrorist structure masterminded the Paris terror attacks last year and Brussels bombings on Tuesday, as all leads pointed to Salah Abdeslam.

Abdeslam fled Paris after the November attacks and hid in Brussels until last week when he was arrested by Belgian authorities.

The capture of Abdeslam was apparently the factor that triggered the Brussels attacks on Tuesday, according to Haaretz.

The Islamic State was concerned that Salah could give sensitive information about the terror plots, after various sources had claimed that he agreed to cooperate.

According to Haaretz, at the moment there is much concern that other terror cells planted by ISIS in Western Europe will soon try to attack Belgium or other countries involved in the war against the militant group that snatched large territories of Iraq and Syria.

At least 31 people died and 270 were injured in the terror bombings of Zaventem airport and Maalbeek metro stop in Brussels. The attacks were claimed by ISIS.

Brothers Ibrahim and Khalid El Bakraoui are among the suicide bombers who created havoc in the Belgian capital.
