Irishman Patrick Hickey, the head of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), was arrested for illegal sale of tickets for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, said the Brazilian police on Wednesday.

Patrick Hickey is accused of being part of a criminal network that sold tickets for the Olympic Games in Rio. Police have issued “an arrest warrant for Irishman Patrick Joseph Hickey, a member of the International Olympic Committee. He was apprehended,” said Brazilian police in a statement.

Hickey was arrested in a hotel in Barra da Tijuca, located west of Rio near the Olympic Village.

The Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) learned of Hickey’s arrest from media and awaits clarification of the situation before making comments. Hickey has been the president of OCI since 1989.

Hickey, a former judoka, is honorary president for life of the federation of judo in his country. He is also a vice president of the Association of National Olympic Committees.

According to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, Hickey felt bad when he was arrested and was taken to the Samaritano hospital in Botafogo, a neighborhood south of Rio.

Police in Brazil announced on Monday that four arrest warrants have been issued, one of them against Briton Marcus Evans, the chairman of the English football club Ipswich Town (League Two).

Last week, Rio police arrested an Irishman specialized in the illegal ticket sales and ten other Brazilians who sold tickets purchased via hacked credit cards.

Irishman Kevin James Mallon, who was arrested on the opening day of Rio Olympics, is one of the leaders of the British company THG, whose president James Sinton was detained two years ago for selling illegally tickets for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
