Russian state airplane checked by F18 jets in Swiss airspace

A Russian government plane was flanked by two Swiss fighter jets on Friday while en route to Peru for the APEC summit. Subsequently, Moscow requested clarifications from the Swiss Government over this incident, according to Reuters.

The Russian state aircraft, an Ilyushin Il-96, was carrying government officials, delegation members and journalists who were appointed to take part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) in Lima.

Several photos with the two fighter jet aircraft nearing the Russian airplane were posted on social networks.

“Friday, November 18, 2016, shortly after 15:00, two military planes F/A-18 Hornet of the Swiss Air Force performed a routine check on a Russian state airplane flying in the Switzerland’s air space. This flight was announced, but as required by International Civil Aviation Organization rules (ICAO) we just verified the identity of the aircraft”, said Daniel Reiste, a spokesman for the Swiss army.

Russian authorities have demanded explanations from the Swiss Government to clarify the situation.

“We called for explanations from Switzerland with respect to the incident involving a Russian state airplane in Swiss airspace”, wrote Russia’s ambassador to Bern on Twitter.

Also Russian President Vladimir Putin flew to the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) but he was apparently on a different aircraft.
