Quake and Tsunami Hit Japan. Fukushima Nuclear Plant Unscheduled ShutDown

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the eastern coast of Japan in Fukushima Prefecture. Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami alert estimating 3-meter high waves in the area. The quake struck 37 kilometers (23 miles) east-southeast of Namie off the country’s east coast at a depth of 11.3 kilometers at around 6 a.m. local time (SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO).

(UPDATE) The water cooling system of the nuclear power plant Fukushima Daini, where thousands of fuel rods are kept, faced an unscheduled stop, according to Japan’s NHK Agency cited by SBS Australia.

Officials are investigating what has happened with the system.

(UPDATE) Tsunami waves up to 3 meters have already been spotted in the eastern ports of Japan according to CNN.

In Fukushima prefecture, waves of about 90 centimeters have already hit the land. The atomic power station is safe, authorities said.

The US Geological Survey had revised the magnitude down to 6.9 but meanwhile Japan put the magnitude of the quake up to 7.4 on Richter scale.

The quake was also felt in Tokyo, about 250 kilometers from the epicenter. Japanese media are not talking about damage or casualties, but say that authorities have started emergency inspections at two nuclear power plants that stopped suddenly.
