The spark of the uproar ignited Tuesday night after Minister of Justice, Florin Iordache, masterminded the hasty aproval of an emergency ordinance that decriminalise official misconduct and other corruption offences.

The ordinance was swiftly registered in the Official Ledger and due to take effect after a 10-day time window when it will decriminalise the abuse-of-power offences in which the financial damage is valued at less than 200,000 lei ($48,000).

The bill, revealed by the Social Democrat-led cabinet of Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu after it claimed power at the beginning of January, has attracted lots of criticism and set off the biggest street demonstrations since the colapse of communism in Romania in 1989.
