The first vehicle crashed into the six-meter-deep nine-meter-wide hole when the asphalt suddenly collapsed along Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Studio City on Friday night, said police sources quoted by local online newspaper LA Times.

The driver, a 48-year-old woman, was recovered alive by the firefighters and taken to hospital.

Another car which stopped on the edge of the sinkhole also fell into the void right under the eyes of the rescuers. Fortunately, the driver had just enough time to leave his vehicle before it sank.

Soon after, the water flooded the space engulfing both cars. Authorities believe the sinkhole was caused by a combination of heavy rainfall and a possible sewer failure.
