EasyJet to ground entire fleet amid coronavirus pandemic

Due to travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus outbreak, EasyJet will ground the entire fleet as of Monday.

The British budget airline speaks of “unprecedented travel restrictions imposed by countries in response to COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of lockdowns in many European countries”. All flights are suspended until further notice. EasyJet’s move comes shortly after Dutch airline Transavia announced the cancellation of all its flights through May 6.

EasyJet, like many other airlines, has been recently busy bringing back travelers from countries where they remained stranded. According to the company, this involved more than 45,000 travelers.

The last of those so-called repatriation flights was conducted on Sunday. “We continue to work with governments to conduct additional flights at their request,” the easyJet said.

The group says it is constantly working to limit costs and expenses in order to curb the financial impact of the corona virus as much as possible. “Keeping our fleet on the ground is a significant cost saver.”

EasyJet is headquartered at London Luton Airport and its fleet consists of 344 aircraft, 8 of which being parked at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
