Firefighters and police in New York are under alert after a giant explosion which emerged on Wednesday in Manhattan’s East Harlem, caused buildings to collapse (scroll for video).
Two people were reported dead and 18 other injured so far in the massive blast which left the area engulfed in dense clouds of dark smoke.
Metro North rail service, which crosses the blast site on Park Avenue, was temporarily canceled.
“Two buildings have collapsed. I hope there is no one in there. It’s just rubble,” a worker at a nearby flea market said.
Clouds of dark smoke could be spotted for a three-block radius as hundreds of rescue workers rushed to the scene.

East Harlem residents have reported hearing a large explosion in an apartment building around 9 o’clock ET. The fire compromised the structural integrity of the building but affected also trains going in and out of grant central station, especially those trains heading to Connecticut.
