“A DIICOT investigation targeting four Black Cube employees accused of spying on Romanian chief anti-corruption prosecutor Laura Codruţa Kovesi, is not related to any Israeli state institution,” reads a press release from the Israeli Embassy to Romania.
“Embassy of Israel wishes to make it clear – referring to the espionage incident that broke out public in the Romanian media – that the Israeli authorities are not involved in this case. We want to emphasize that the investigation points to the employees of a private company that is not linked to any Israeli state institution”, reads the communiqué from the diplomatic representation.
According to the Times of Israel, Black Cube confirmed that two of its employees – Ron Weiner and David Geclowicz -, were arrested in Romania. As for the former Mossad officers Avi Yanus and Dan Zorella, the company dismissed information over their investigation as false.
In a statement released in response to the reports, the company says its workers were themselves investigating claims of corruption by the Romanian government.

”Recently, the company undertook a project in Romania to gather evidence of serious corruption in the Romanian government and its agencies. While performing this work, two of the company’s employees were arrested after having made significant discoveries,” the statement read.
“Needless to say, all of Black Cube’s employees follow local law to the letter, and the allegations against them are unfounded and untrue. We have total confidence that the truth will be revealed, and they will both be released safely to return home in the coming days.” Former Mossad director Meir Dagan was honorary president of Black Cube until his death last month.
It is not clear yet what project Black Cube was referring to, nor what jurisdiction allowed them to tackle corruption on foreign ground. However, the Romanian investigators are expected to shed some light on this case soon. According to Daniel Horodniceanu, the chief prosecutor of the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), the prosecutors are looking into who hired Black Cube to carry out the spying attack on the DNA’s chief Laura Kosevi.
